MATCHING LONG TERM PLANNING WITH COMMUNITY-LED ACTION, TO DEVELOP AN INSIGHTFUL AND IMPLEMENTABLE PLACEMAKING STRATEGY DELIVERED WITH AN ACTIVATED COMMUNITY.

Client: Indigo Shire Council

The Winner of the 2019 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Community Engagement Commendation goes to CoDesign Studio.

Indigo Shire Council is a substantially sized region in the state of Victoria filled with a diverse array of towns and communities. Many of townships across the State are facing similar issues of economic development, industry change, highway road safety, and community development, and yet each location has its very own unique identity and story, full of inherent value.

Wanting to empower their local communities and shape a strategy that would truly connect and take hold in their region, Indigo Shire Council brought in CoDesign Studio to facilitate tailored phases of engagement, strategy and activation of the township of Kiewa Tangambalanga.

The Strategy was developed through our globally recognised community-led placemaking approach. This involved residents, businesses and stakeholders throughout the area in an exciting engagement phase combined with an action module to deliver of temporary projects to prototype priority actions, gauge early buy-in and foster local social capital to deliver on the strategy long-term.

Concurrently, we worked alongside the Victorian Planning Authority who were co-ordinating a Township Structure Plan for Tangambalanga. In this way, we were able to link longer term planning for the area with shorter term prototyping to align a strategic roadmap that would be truly implementable and garner optimal results.

CoDesign Studio then secured funding through a VicRoads Innovation Grant to enable the community to test and trial upgrades to the streetscape through temporary placemaking initiatives that matched
planning with action to make improvements to the townships through a collaborative, future focused, hands on approach.

We are pleased to share the news that CoDesign Studio was announced as the Winner of 2019 PIA Planning Institute of Australia engagement commendation for our work in the region.

We are now actively working in similar regions to continue implementing our "Projects + Planning" approach.
